Charm of Holland - Volendam, Marken, Edam & Windmills

Marken, Volendam, Edam and Zaanse Schans
5 out of 5 stars (5 reviews)

We depart from Amsterdam and take you on a scenic drive through the beautiful countryside of the Netherlands. Our first stop is Marken, a small fishing town renowned for preserving traditional Dutch culture. Our guide takes you on a walking tour through the charming streets, sharing with you the history of this special place. Our tour even includes a visit to a wooden shoemaker, where you can see a craftsman busy at work, demonstrating the fine skill of wooden shoemaking.

Be welcomed onboard the Marken Express as we continue our journey to Volendam. But this is no ordinary boat ride! On our tour, we treat you to a cup of coffee and a tasty pastry (included in the tour price). Enjoy this relaxing ride and the beautiful view of the IJssel lake. When we arrive in Volendam, you have free time to explore this Dutch fishing village, browse the shops, or even take a picture of yourself in traditional Volendam costume. We meet together for a delicious lunch at a restaurant along the dike (also included).

Our next stop is a gem in the heart of North Holland. Perhaps you have heard of this special place and maybe you have even eaten the cheese that comes  from here?  The little town of Edam is famous for its cheese, which has been enjoyed around the world for centuries. As a special treat included in our tour, we take you for a cheese tasting, so you can savor the  flavor of Edam. Not only is Edam famous for cheese, it also has a rich history as a former shipyard and is home to one of the Netherlands´ largest churches, the `Grote Kerk´. Walk the cobblestone streets and gaze upon the quaint homes and bridges along Edam´s canals. It´s like taking a stroll through a Dutch postcard.

From Edam, we continue our scenic countryside drive until we arrive at Zaanse Schans, with its magnificent collection of historic windmills which have been preserved since the 18th and 19th centuries. The area also has picturesque homes, wooden barns and scenic meadows for you to see.  Our tour includes a special visit to one of the windmills, where you can explore the inside and discover the importance of this Dutch icon.

Zaanse Schans completes your authentic Dutch excursion and we then take you back to Amsterdam, content with experiences, memories and nostalgia.

The duration of this tour is approximately 8 hours.

This was a good way to see Holland and it's culture. The villages that you visit are typical for Netherlands, this is culture! My family enjoyed the boat ride to Marken a lot and we liked to walk around in Volendam. We did not go inside the windmill but made nice pictures infront of them in Zaanse Schans open air museum town. It worth the price.
" Veru beautiful and interesting tour "

The 4 small villages are really pretty and worth a visit. My only complain is the little time spent at Zaanse Schans (windmills). We had to run for the windmill explanation and then we just had 30 minutes to walk around the entire village. We had to rush for the bus. Don't understand why -the tour could have 45min/1 hour more so that we wouldn't have to rush. Loved the cheese factory, Volendam is really pleasant. Lunch in Volendam was simple but tasty. I wish we had a little more time in the very cute little Edam as well, so that we could sit at a cafe and enjoy the place. But anyway I would recommend the tour for a friend.

Yvette and Bert were both incredible! We loved every part of the tour. the sights were amazing, the lunch and food tasting was delicious, and the tour guide was fabulous. From the cheese museum to the shoe factory, everything built a beautiful picture of rural Netherlands. There were several aspects that could have been improved though: First, we only had an hour in the first windmill village, and I wish there could have been more time spent there. Second, I wish we could have had one whole Stroopwafel, rather than just a little piece. I would have also liked to know a little more about the award-winning Poffertjes place outside the Stroopwafel place. Third, the last stop was a little much. Walking through the village was cold and I wanted a hot drink. Also, we should have been told to bring coins for the bathrooms.
