Giethoorn 'the Dutch Venice' & Enclosing Dike

5 out of 5 stars (6 reviews)

Giethoorn is a peaceful village in the province Overijssel that is often referred to as the “Little Venice” of the Netherlands, due to its numerous waterways and absence of roads and cars. Its beautiful canals, picturesque wooden bridges and farmhouses with centuries-old thatched roofs give it a unique fairy-tale vibe. The tour will take you from Amsterdam to Giethoorn by bus, where you will cruise the canals by boat and have time to explore the town on your own.

After lunch we continue to the impressive 32 km. long Enclosing dike in the Ijsselmeer, on of the largest lakes in Western Europe.  It is a fundamental part of the larger Zuiderzee works, damming off the Zuiderzee, a salt water inlet of the North Sea, and turning it into the fresh water lake of the IJsselmeer.

As most of Giethoorn is only accessible by boat, it has become famous for being a village without roads. It borders the Weerribben-Wieden National Park, which is the largest fen in northwestern Europe. During the trip, you’ll see the beautiful waterways and old farmhouses that line their banks and experience the peace, tranquility and natural beauty of this magical place. You will also have free time to explore this fairy-tale village without roads on your own, take pictures or grab something to eat (lunch is not included). Besides its fame as a village without roads, Giethoorn is also known for its excellent restaurants where you'll be able to eat some lunch (not included). Afterwards, the bus will take you to the Afsluitdijk(“Dike Enkhuizen-Lelystad”) where we will stop for photos.

During Winter season (October 30th 2017 up to and including March 21st 2018) the boat trip included in the full day excursion to Giethoorn could be influenced by weather conditions. Please inform your clients about this.

The tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. I loved hearing the history of Holland. Geithoorn is so quaint. I love painting, so the charming houses with thatched roofs and beautiful gardens are an inspiration.
