Marken, Volendam and the Windmills

Marken, Volendam and Zaanse Schans
5 out of 5 stars (82 reviews)

Description

During this tour you will visit the picturesque fishing villages of Volendam and Marken. You will drive through typical Dutch polders and along narrow dykes. Our luxury coach will take you to the Zaanse Schans and its many unique windmills. The old crafts of the Netherlands are not lacking in this tour. You will visit a wooden clog maker and you can see how Dutch cheese is made the traditional way.

Itinerary

This excursion takes us to the countryside north of Amsterdam, to the edge of the river Zaan, where we visit windmill village ‘de Zaanse Schans’, with its characteristic green wooden houses. On the turn of the 18th century this district was an industrial area with approximately 700 windmills in use. In this day and age there are only five left. Through typical Dutch scenery we continue to Volendam for a city walk and the traditional fisherman’s village of Marken, situated on the shores of the former Zuiderzee. This tour includes a visit to a working windmill, boatride between Marken and Volendam, a demonstration in a cheese factory and visit to a traditional clogmaker.
The tour is live guided, but supported by an GPS audio system in 16 languages.

" Good, but not perfect. "
3 out of 5 stars
Interesting stops, but time at the wind mills is way to short and the time at Volendam is to long.
" Beautiful marken & volendam "

The place was amazing. Unfortunatelly during our tour the weather are not good due to raining. The tour guide: Selena, Juan & William are helpfull and informatif.
" Marken, Volendam and the Windmills tour "

I normally dont like tours but the Amsterdam city tours group did an excellent job. Each place was given the right amount of time and the staff was extremely friendly. The activities were perfect. Great job!

Good tour to get the traditional feel of the rural Netherlands. Fairly typical big bus big group tour. They were pretty organized and the day went as planned.
" Very good overall tour! "
4 out of 5 stars
Good tour of interesting places outside of Amsterdam. All places crowded with tourists and such (of course) but they do a good job keeping the tour together- though sometimes you feel like cattle. The sites are very nice and educational as demonstrations are provided. The guides and driver are quite friendly. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone wanting a little more local culture even if it is quite touristy 😊
" Great way to spend the day "

Very good trip to the outskirts of Amsterdam Fun and relaxing we were able to see and learn a lot Steff and Diana were great guides I recommend
" Tour to the Dutch countryside: Windmills, Cheese factory, Clog maker, Stroopwaffel bakery "
5 out of 5 stars
This tour really covers all you need to experience the Dutch heritage and countryside. We went to a Stroopwaffel bakery, a cheese factory and a clog maker's shop; all with demonstrations! There was lots of taste testing at the bakery and the cheese factory. We even went on a ferry ride! This tour was everything we could have asked for. The only thing that could be an improvement is that it would have been nice to spend more time at the windmills and in the village. We felt rushed while there.

" Nice tours but expect big grp and not much of commentary "
3 out of 5 stars
Deliver as per itinerary - physically. However I wished the tour caters for only one language. The guide speaks both English n Spanish for the tour. I struggle to listen to the commentary which frankly very little is done in English and Very little commentary to start with too.
" I went to the windmills, shoe factory , cheese factory and a ferry. "

This half day trip from 3 pm to 9 pm was really excellent, the team of 4 are so attentive, professional, funny, helpful and I really think this tour worth the money. I really like the dinner time that giving us enough time to eat. I will recommend people to join this tour. I am also from Hong Kong and have travel a lot internationally. I found this tour is very customer orientated and really well pace out the time that we done a lot without felling rush. Your staff on board are really making a difference to our tour, it was delightful to have them all.
" Amsterdam Countryside! "
5 out of 5 stars
We appreciate the tour being very organized, communicated in English and Spanish, and a clean bus. This was our first tour out of Amsterdam. It provided lovely scenic views, demonstrations, and interesting information like the water management, just awesome. Guides were great! There is quite a bit of walking. Also "toilette" is .50 - 1 euro. Another 20 minutes at the last stop would have been perfect! We are so happy to have taken this tour!
" well organized and fun trip "
5 out of 5 stars
We love the excursion. My Mom is 82 years old, she can keep up with other travelers, so the pace is just right, a good balance between sightseeing and rest. The variety of the sites is nice. We are pleasantly surprised with the quality of the lunch food, service and the good price. The driver, guide (Benedict, Angelina) were professional and helpful. We had a great tour. The only minor improvement that can be made is the safety when crossing bike lanes. Tourists like us are not used to the way lanes are designed and of course things are so new and we have to follow the guide, not a safe condition. Maybe have a clear briefing at the beginning, or have an extra guide to help.
" Great experience "
5 out of 5 stars
The windmill was a working saw mill. The inner working was quite interesting. The demonstration on the making of wooden shoe at the shoe factory was quite expertly done, also with a little humor. This also true the demo at the cheese factory — lots of free samples. The guides were very friendly and helpful, especially to my wife who was in a wheelchair (she can walk a little).
" Fantastic Tour "
5 out of 5 stars
What an excellent tour! It takes you away from the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam city to the countryside to experience some of the local villages, people and their trades. The tour guides Giorgio, Juan and Steve the driver were exceptional - full of knowledge, enthusiasm and fun! I definitely recommend this tour!
" Fun Afternoon "
4 out of 5 stars
Tour was good. Cheese making demonstration was not very interesting since it was very fast, and just talking about the process, showing a few pieces of equipment. Not really a demonstration. But the tasting part was good! Windmill and shoe maker demos were more interesting. Tour guide Diana was GREAT! Not only did she speak several different languages fluently, she has a wonderfully warm and vibrant personality that very much suits the job she is doing. We were running a little late to get to the office and check in. Given how close it was to a tour time, it would have been nice for the people behind the counter to actually look up and check to see if anyone was waiting to check in for the tour. I was concerned we were going to miss the bus because they wouldn’t even listen to me say excuse me to get their attention that we were trying to get checked in. Thankfully the person who walks you to the bus came in for a last call for anyone going to the bus and they finally got us squared away.
" Awesome Tour with Awesome Guides "
5 out of 5 stars
One of the best planned tours I have taken in many countries. From the windmills to the cheese factory, to the boot making store, the tour is so well conceptualised. And the tour guide and the driver were absolutely amazing people. They even taught us some Dutch songs even though it was not listed in the package! Will come back again. Thank you.
" Amazing tour! You're gonna enjoy it! "

The best tour you can do when being in Amsterdam. From the beginning until the end, you really enjoy the adventure. I strongly recommend the tour.

Great information on Bus I was born in Holland & many pieces of information were new to me. Still not happy about no refund in the Giethoorn tour we were not able to make and this $170 could be used for some of your other tours .
" Fun Afternoon Overall "
4 out of 5 stars
My husband and I enjoyed the excursion and I felt like the morning tour was a good option as places seemed less crowded than I expected. I wish we had more time at the Windmills...by the time you explore the working mill, take pictures and trek back to where the shops/coffee are it's time to leave. I'd have loved more time to explore the cute village there. Volendam was also quaint, but it seemed early for lunch -- not many places were serving food other than the restaurant that all the tour groups are sent to, which was a bit disappointing. Marken, and the ferry ride over to the island was a highlight -- as was the clog factory demonstrating. Loved learning about the local history! Overall, worth the spend and the time to see outside the city and learn more about the rich history of the region!
" Nice tour "
3 out of 5 stars
A nice tour but not value for money. 59€ is too much for a 5-6hours tour where no meals are offered. Also it should be in smaller group of people.
" Fantastic day trip! "

This tour was very good. It was great value for money. The guides Francesco and Natalia were very helpful and nice. Enjoyed the tour despite the rainy weather.
" Too short time to see windmills "
3 out of 5 stars
Wasting time to see wooden shoes at Marken and just less than one hour to see windmills is out of my expectation.
" Great tour "
5 out of 5 stars
Even though you don’t spend the entire day in these cities, this tour is perfect to have a quick view. They are very punctual which is a great thing and show the important aspects of these places. If you’re in Amsterdam for a few days, this is a must.
" A lovely day outside Amsterdam "
4 out of 5 stars
My husband, two teenage sons and I took the morning tour from Amsterdam. On the bus ride to our first stop, the windmills, we listened to one of our guides and a pre-recorded audio commentary about the area and its history. The bus itself was very comfortable. The visit to the windmills was wonderful! The town was even more picturesque than it had appeared in pictures. We visited a working windmill and were given a presentation by a millworker who had worked there for decades . The views from the top of the windmill was stunning. We had a little time to get some hot cocoa for my sons before heading back to the bus. Our next stop was Volendam, a small fishing village. There we went to a cheese factory and store. We received a very brief explanation about how gouda is made and then had the opportunity to sample many different types of gouda in the store above. We walked out with enough cheese to last us a couple of years. Having tried it back home, it's as delicious as it was in the shop. In Volendam we had time to walk around the village or to have lunch. My sons opted to walk around and get some frites. My husband and I had lunch at a small cafe the guide suggested. She told us that the portions were large enough to share so we ordered the fried cod and frites to split. She was right--the portions were enormous and delicious! After lunch we took a ferry from Volendam to Marken, which we were told is an island where people still wear traditional dress and wooden shoes. Our guide lead us through the narrow streets passed charming little homes to a shop where we saw wooden shoes being made. The shoemaker was very entertaining and you could try on a pair after the presentation. My only disappointment was that we didn't see any locals wearing traditional dress or shoes. I wouldn't have been disappointed if they hadn't advertised this as such, but they did. The bus met us outside the wooden shoe factory and we were back off to Amsterdam. In all, a lovely day trip that gave us a taste of life in the countryside of the Netherlands.
" Very fantastic tour "

We enjoyed the tour. We enjoyed lunch of country side in Volendam.. We are still remembering it. We also like ship cruise to Marken. Thanks for it. Last but not least. Staff was always co-operative and share good information about various places. regards, Dinesh
" Very well organized "
5 out of 5 stars
We did the 12:15 tour and found it to be very informative and scenic. It was not rushed as a lot of other people had mentioned. We even enjoyed a lovely meal at the end of the tour before heading back to Amsterdam. Our guides and Driver were all very friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend this tour.
" Fun to see all of these things, drastically over priced "
3 out of 5 stars
Based on what we did for the day and some quick research majority of the things we did today we're actually free so we paid for an expensive bus ride and some information during the tours. I enjoyed the experience still but I am a bit upset J paid so much for it, when I could have rented a car for cheaper and done all the same things.
" Seeing a lot in a shortish Tour "
5 out of 5 stars
Great tour filled with tons of activities and yet relatively minimal travel times since everything was so close together. The tours of the windMills, the cheese factory and the wooden shoe factory were all good, but it was learning about the Netherlands history with the sea that was most interesting. Great tour guides, especially the lead guy who spoke so many languages!
" Amazing time! "
5 out of 5 stars
Definitely a must to do when visiting! The windmills, boat ride, cheese factory, clog factory, all wonderful! Amazing guides too!
" Great snapshot of Holland! "
5 out of 5 stars
I loved the half-day tour! I only had one full day in Amsterdam and this was a great way to see many of the essential highlights - windmills, wooden shoes, cheese factory, and amazing countryside! I visited on an absolutely freezing day (which made the boat part of the tour impossible) but the sights were worth being out in the bitter cold! Seeing a windmill in action with an excellent explanation of how it works was a highlight! Every tour guide was super-informative, friendly and knowledgeable in multiple in languages. I'm glad I got to see so much of Holland this way and still had hours left in the day to explore Amsterdam on my own. Well worth it!
" Less than impressed "
3 out of 5 stars
Being a tour operator myself in the US. I will never recommend this tour again to anyone. I’ve put my word on this tour and took it today for myself and was less than impressed. Mainly, because I overheard a tour operator flat out lie to a guest. To state that certain items can’t be purchased elsewhere but other than the first stop on the tour is a lie By the 3rd stop the item asked about could be purchased for 6 Euro less. Also, tour was ran from a self serving stance of the tour company. Sad!!
" Amazing!!! "

If you plan to visit the beautiful countryside of Holland, or if you would like to experience the dutch culture, this tour is gonna be a good choice for you! The tour was well planed, and the tour guide was very friendly and helpful!
" Worth the time and money! "
4 out of 5 stars
The trip started according to schedule. what I like most is the volendam scenery and windmill zaanse schans. perhaps if the windmill tour is a bit longer then we will have more time to wander around the village. the tour guide brief us with mix of english and dutch explanation.
" Good. Just wish there was more time "
4 out of 5 stars
Overall, this tour was good. A must-do for anyone visitinf Amsterdam. You start off with the Windmills which has a free demonstration of the how the wind-powered oil mill works, followed by a trip to the Dutch clog makers then a boat trip to the cheese factory. I really have no complaints, except for one thing (or two): I just wish we weren't so rushed. I felt there wasn't enough time to walk around on our own, explore and take pictures. Sure you'll be able to but you will feel rushed. They can't emphasize enough that you have to be back by a certain time. Also, you are not allowed to eat or drink on the bus- so if you buy a strooplwaffle during your windmill tour, expect to eat it fast. Because of this, I give them a solid 4 star, I can't go above that.
" Enjoyable and pleasent "
5 out of 5 stars
We took the half day tour to the windmills, Volendam and Marken. The guides were courteous and looked after us well, showed us around with a lot of interest and made the whole experience enjoyable. The bus was comfortable and the whole trip was nicely spaced and well planned.
" A nice culture introduction. "
4 out of 5 stars
Our tour included many parts including seeing the inside of a windmill, a cheese factory, a clog maker and a baker. All the actual demonstration stops were quite small with part of our tour group having to stand some times. Each demonstration was actually quite short, 10 minutes or less. Previous reviews stated that more time in each village would have been appreciated and my family agrees. It felt like we were rushed from one site to another without time to soak in the beautiful sights or talk to locals about their culture. Overall the tour was nice, we did learn a lot, however we feel there was a lot left out strictly due to the limited time.
" Tour to Zaanse Schans, Markem and Voledam was great. "

We had a great day on this tour. Our tour guide ILLY was fantastic, along with our other guide (not sure of his name, though) and coach driver. They were all very nice and made the tour very enjoyable. Thank you
" Very Good but more time (and windmills) would have been great "
4 out of 5 stars
It was very organized. Left on time and got to places on time. The windmills are now only icons (just 5 left standing against modernization thanks to the windmill association for this) but their significance was well explained by Daniella. Would have loved to enjoy hot choco n goodies and sit or walk around more since Zaanschan is a nice place. Same with the clog town. Daniella ang Jamil were able to keep us on time without appearing to hurry us up (great ability). Same with Marken and Volendam nice places to have just wandered around snacking and buying. There were the usual infomercial at each stop and they were good not just telling you to buy. Ate a lot of cheese (bought at lot too, smoked ones really good) Ferry was a nice touch very good added value for expirience (added because we took the bus on the way back). Audio added very little abd has to be update. So yes it was really enjoyable educational and worth it. Thanks to Daniella Jamil and the driver (his dream house is my dream house too)
" Excellent trip! "

It was very good trip, Hillary and Her assistant( I think his name was Gooron) were very friendly and nice. They answer all questions with patients and very good knowledge. I will definitely recommend to anyone visits Holland to take this tour, special thanks to David which solved my problem very nicely.

5 out of 5 stars
My main reason for choosing this tour was to see Zaanse Schans and the countryside of The Netherlands. The villages themselves would've been enough to wow me but the demonstrations at the windmill, clog factory and the cheese factory were all added bonus. I was a solo traveller on this tour but the tour guides were fantastic, even the bus driver was very kind and humorous that made me feel very much part of the group. I would recommend this tour to anyone who wants to experience the Dutch countryside without the fuss of planning and finding your way to such places.
" Fabulous tour "

Fabulous tour of some beautiful locations and a very helpful guide, very informative and so relaxing to see the wonderful sights.
" Visit to the Windmills was a great experience. "

" Windmills Voldendam "

My teenage son and I took a 5.5 hour tour of the windmills, Marken and Voldendam. High recommend. Tour was well organized, transportation was comfortable, tour guides were very friendly and helpful. You will be glad you saw this part of the Netherlands and you'll learn interesting facts and history. Great value.

" A tour not to be missed! "
4 out of 5 stars
very interesting and informative tour, departure point easily accessible from the Central Station; the day was quite full which might have contributed to some panic on the part of some of the participants especially the elderly. The excursion leader and assistant were very friendly while the places visited were fascinating. I recommend this tour.
" Splendid trip "

The places they brought us are excellent with beautiful scenery. However the tour is too short. Hope I can spend more time at one please.. The tour guide is good.
" Great trip to calm Holland areas "
5 out of 5 stars
I was glad to book this trip! It was very convenient to be on a tour bus and not to use public transport to see all these places. All presentations were very interesting and informative. The speakers were using English and Spanish. I would recommend to increase time (+20 min) for staying next to the windmills. It's so beautiful there and 20 min more would fill the trip with more calmness as for me the planned time was not enough and I had to run back to the bus not to miss it. The process of the whole trip was organized wisely and all the detailes were taken into account. It was a positive experience. Thank you.
" Must Do "

" Fantastic "

Everything was very well organized and the guides were really very nice...we really enjoyed everything, and the cheese factory was also fun..but the only problem was that the group was huge, would have been better if there were less people..

" Best tour to go on from Amsterdam! "
5 out of 5 stars
I thoroughly enjoyed this tour and thought it was good value for money. The guide and staff were helpful and friendly and very professional. The tour left straight on time and the coach was very comfortable - you're provided with headphones to listen to commentary as you go through the Dutch countryside. This tour is perfect for those short on time or just want a compact but comprehensive introduction to the towns outside of Amsterdam. Being on the early tour means you can also avoid the crowds when you get to the charming windmill village of Zaanse Schans! Would definitely buy another tour from here when I go to Amsterdam again!
" Great day to the countryside "

The day was well balanced with information and free time. Volendam and Marken are beautiful and well worth the visit.
" It was OK "

That was not enough time at the windmills. Riding across the lake was boring. Would not recommend for the elderly. Too fast paced.
" Marken, Volendam and Windmills "

Loved touring the countryside, very beautiful. The towns are quaint and charming. The windmills were extremely interesting and we could have spent more time there. The cheese factory was like heaven for me. Would have loved to hear more indepth information on the cheese making process. Also loved the wooden clogs. This tour was very informative and a lot of fun. Thank you.
" Great 1/2 day Adventure "

Highly recommend this tour for anyone that wants to see a bit of Amsterdam outside the main city. Didn't take long to get to all of the locations and the tour guides were very nice and made the trip very enjoyable.
" Best experience :) "

Recommend to all, tour was wonderful, tour guide was amazing (Edgar), places we have visit are like in fairy tale.... :)
" Marken, Volendam and the Windmills , a breath of nature in Holland "
5 out of 5 stars
This was for me a spectacular tour to breath the true nature of Dutch landscapes. Each stop was designed in a very smart way to seize any essential aspects of the life in Holland. Half an hour boat cruise was included to catch the breeze from Volendam to Marken. The bus driver and the guide were professional and kind. Don't miss it!
" Lovely windmills "
4 out of 5 stars
Overall, my husband and I were happy with this tour. We saw a lot. The two little towns were charming. Having a guide provides a lot of information. We could do this on our own but choose a tour like this for convenience. The only negative is we were sooooo hungry. We were up early to get in the bus at 8:45 and and got back at 2:40 ish. There was an hour break in Volendam but that was at 10:15 am, too early for lunch. Maybe if the tour was Marken first then we could have ate lunch in Volendam. We were able to use the canal cruise and saw more of the city but at water level. Our windmill pictures turned out great!

" Fantastic tour "
5 out of 5 stars
Loved the tour. Our guide (Edgar) was very knowledgeable and fun to be with. We had some free time to eat and look around in the villages. Saw a lot that one probably wouldn't see on your own. I would definitely recommend this tour. Keep in mind they also offer a tour to Keukenhof Gardens but would not book them the same day. I did them as separate tours and never felt rushed!
" trip to the countryside "
4 out of 5 stars
This tour was well organized (including the use of headsets so that we did not have to listen to commentary in multiple languages). We got a good impression of the Dutch countryside and I also enjoyed the free canal cruise a couple of days later. We got to Marken a little late, after the shops had closed - since we'd had snacks at the cheese factory we could have left Volendam 1/2 hour earlier (and had dinner after getting back to Amsterdam).

" Marken is nice from Volendam "

You can make pictures in authentic clothings in volendam, lots of fun with my family. Try to eat fish in volendam, it is very good! Everywhere restaurants
" Great tour! "
5 out of 5 stars
Our guide was amazing, we had such a great time with our group, he was very funny and knowledgable. Volendam is a great little fishermans town, de Zaanse Schans is definately one of the highlights with a lot of authentic Dutch houses and a lot of original windmills that are hundreds of years old and still functional! There were also some shops, you can get some nice cheeses there too. Overall, wonderfull day, would definately recommend!
" I liked it. "

I just wish that we would have had more time to be able to get off the bus to see more places.
