Private Windmills/Zaanse Schans Tour

Zaanse Schans
5 out of 5 stars (8 reviews)

If you book between the 15th of October and 21st of March the tour you will receive a one hour canal cruise per person for FREE in Amsterdam.

This excursion takes you north of Amsterdam, to the edge of the river Zaan, where you will visit the spectacular windmill village of Zaanse Schans with its characteristic green wooden houses. One of the very first industrial villages of the Netherlands, Zaanse Schans and the surrounding area it were once home to over 700 traditional 16th century Dutch windmills. Of these, only five remain, all perfectly intact, and you will get a chance to tour one with all the traditional mechanisms explained to you.

The driver guide will also show you a little bit of the UNESCO Heritage the “Beemster” reclaimed land that lies beneath sea level.

The Zaanse Schans offers an amazing in-depth look into the culture and history of North Holland. From the Zaans Museum, to the traditional northern houses, the historical windmills, and the Tsar Peter House, there is a lot to learn about the Zaanse Schans and the people who call this beautiful region home.

Your driver/guide will explain to you the traditional Dutch crafts on display which include the wooden shoemaker, pewter makers at the “De Tinkoepel Pewter Foundry”, and cheese at the “De Catharina Hoeve” cheese farm, which you will subsequently even get a chance to try. We highly recommend you take souvenir clogs and some delicious cheese home with you.

If you desire a break from the savory, there is a delicious bakery, the “In de Gecroonde Duyvekater,” which dates its founding back to 1658 that will happily oblige your taste buds with freshly baked local pastries. While you eat, you can browse the Bakery Museum that forms part of the premises. Other Zaanse Schans sites include the Museum of the Dutch Clock, and the Distiller Museum and Tasting Room. After you’ve explored the Zaanse Schans and had some free time to stroll around at your own pace, your driver will take you back to your hotel in Amsterdam.

" Windmills "
5 out of 5 stars
The windmills are actually working windmills and are worth spending the 5 Euros each to see. Each windmill is different. We really like the saw mill.
" Great Tour Guide "
5 out of 5 stars
We really enjoyed our windmill tour. Our tour guide was very informative and helpful during this trip. Not only did we spend time at the windmills, cheese making factory and clog making, our guide took us to a small village to get a good local meal and take the ferry to another small town. I would recommend this guide for sure. Thank you for much for making the family experience one to remember.
" Zaanse schans windmill tour. "
5 out of 5 stars
Great tour, felt like we were in the countryside and got to see something that we could not within Amsterdam itself. Our guide, Jeffrey, was amazing, both helpful and attentive making sure we did not have to carry souvenir bags and bringing back umbrellas when it started to rain slightly. Helped make the visit even more enjoyable. Very well organized, took much of the effort out of my hands!
" Transportation, not a tour "
3 out of 5 stars
While our driver, Ken, was very nice, he was not a guide. He drove us to Zaans Schans, dropped us off & picked us up when we were done. He also took us to Marken since we had time. Not what I expected.
" Should be titled "transportation" instead of "tour" "
4 out of 5 stars
We weren't expecting a guided tour, but thought we'd get at least a little information on the site from our driver. Nonetheless, he was extremely kind and punctual.
" Excellent tour "

Guide had excellent knowledge of the various places we visited and historical background as well.

Thank you Amsterdam City Tour for wonderful trip to Zaan Schanse. We had a great time visiting Amsterdam. Your driver was punctual and was patient waiting for me to shop. The only sad thing was, I didnt get his name. Dear Driver, thank you so much for riding us around..
" Private Windmill Tour "
4 out of 5 stars
I had a wonderful time touring the windmills, clog factory, cheese factory and the village with my 2 children. It was super interesting and educational, our driver was knowledgable and helpful. The area is incredibly beautiful. The demonstrations in the factory and the saw mills were great for the kids. I would certainly recommend this tour!
